Rachel Jordan is a music graduate from Exeter University. Whilst there her main instrument was the oboe,
studying with Heather Williams from Dartington. She sang with the Exeter University Singers, directed by Donald James, and was a member of the Exeter Early Music Group in which she sang, and also played recorder and crumhorn.
Having moved to Lewes in 1978, she began instrumental teaching of oboe, clarinet, flute and recorder
– her students ranging in age from 5 to 80+!! In the early 1980s she played oboe and cor anglais in the Sussex University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra as well as in other smaller ensembles. Another musical interest is
Sacred Harp singing, a tradition of choral music that originated in New England and was later carried on in the American south. With her partner, Nick Hall, she has travelled all over Europe and the States often as a leader of
this spirited sacred music.
Rachel has been Music Director of Sussex Harmony since 1997, having been a member of the quire since
1992. She undertakes research into the music that was performed in Sussex we are fortunate that she has discovered and edited many of the hymns, psalms, anthems and glees that form the repertoire of Sussex Harmony. Under her direction
the quire has sung in a variety of venues the length and breadth of Sussex and beyond
Rachel has led the quire in:
Concerts -- Weddings -- Funerals -- Harvest Suppers -- Evensongs -- Carol Concerts or Services
-- Music for plays at Lewes Little Theatre, Berwick; and Chiddingly -- Workshops -- Singing days
